Last but not least, this track comes from a young up and comer in the music game. He received notoriety from a mash-up that he did, which went viral, that was pretty phenomenal. I’ll throw that one in at the bottom, it is Daylight Savings Times right? It’s a holiday in some states I’m told. (I’m posting this blog even though I posted it on my other one last week because IT’S THAT GOOD.

This life is one that is filled with struggles and various obstacles. As imperfect people in an imperfect world, these are things that we simply have to deal with. I find myself blessed with great friends and people around me that are encouraging and uplifting. This specific blog post was inspired by a conversation with one of my dearest friends.

At times, we may think that the obstacles we are dealing with our unique and that we are the only ones to have ever gone through it. This usually is not the case at all. A simple google search usually reveals others that have gone through the same thing you are.  They  have either written about their entire experience or simply share the fact that they are going through it. The simple realization that you are not so alone in what you are going through can be quite reassuring.  Life is a funny thing and has an interesting way of playing out. I strongly believe that everything happens for a reason. Things may not make sense in the moment and may be quite frustrating, but when you look back on it later in life the pieces of the puzzle may start to fit together.

So my advice to you all today my friends, is to have some perspective and know that you’re not alone. No matter what you are going through at the moment, how tough it may seem or how insurmountable the task may appear to be, you’re not alone. I would encourage you to reach out to those around you and share your thoughts, your struggles, and your hopes and dreams. You never know who may be going through the same thing that you’re going through, or who you may encourage or inspire to keep on going. Remember that life is a marathon and not a sprint, take one day at a time, take the time to enjoy what’s around you and the situation you are presently in.

I overheard something a classmate of mine said today and it immediately led to a flurry of emotions. I was shocked, surprised and also a little angry. I guess the situation requires a little background and explanation.

The first part of his comment was not necessarily something that I had never heard before, but it snowballed into something more serious and pointed. My classmate, who happens to be a White male, said that stereotypes and profiling are both good and should be utilized. This comment spurred a few retorts by my other classmates but that didn’t stop him there. He continued his diatribe and stated that once White people started blowing up planes then he would be okay being stopped at the airport as well. He said all of this in front of a few of my classmates, who happen to be a part of certain races that might be the focus of stereotyping or racial profiling. His string of comments led me to some personal reflection. I began to think about racism, bullying and just hurtful words or phrases. As I experienced outrage as a result of his comments, I began to think on things that I might have said in the past in jest or seriously that were hurtful or just plain rude and mean.

The truth of the matter is in our society, at the risk of infringing on “free speech” or for the sake of a good joke, racism and hurtful words or phrases are commonplace. This little part of my day made me want to be vigilant in my own life and speech to be conscious of what comes out of my mouth and censor myself. We all grew up with the adage, “If you can’t say anything nice, then don’t say anything at all.”  I think it’s time that society is reminded about that again. I understand that the human race is imperfect and that there will always be intolerance or hate, but it would be nice to see the hate and intolerance diminish.
